Even as I write that I realize it’s probably a lot easier said than done to get started. If your life is anything like mine it gets increasingly busier. In many cases this means that your dreams of owning a profitable business seem to get further and further away. Unless you actually start today.
Believe me, I know, that there are always too few hours in the day! I often find myself asking God if he could please add another hour to the day. as Between a job, a second blog, an online business, an annual conference I host and making time for family & friends I feel truly swamped at times. And usually am up writing at 3am with a full days work ahead of me in a couple of hours. So, for those of you like myself, I wanted to share 5 small steps I made to get started and what I continue to do, even when I feel too tired to do so!
Decide to Start Small
You must determine that you are going to start now building your business. Just think about looking back on your life a year from now and being in the same position you are in currently. That should be motivation enough to start heading in the direction of your dreams. Start small, but creating a brief description of what you want your life to look like. Answer the questions: what type of business will I run, who will benefit from my business and what problems will I solve? Keep this list with you, or place it somewhere where you will see it often to remind you to keep hustling.
Allot Time
Have an allotted amount of time you will do something small every day. It would be ideal if you chose a regular time of day, but with a busy schedule you may just have to fit it in where you can. Some progress is better than no progress, so the amount of time that you set does not matter. It could be as little as 10 minutes a day for 5 days a week, as long as you stick to the routine.
Make a list
This should be the first small thing you do to get you started. Take your allotted amount of time to make a list of everything you can think of doing to get started in your business. Basically, brain dump as many things as you can think of! It could be something like, purchasing a domain name, thinking of a company name, starting your blog, researching ideas, calling potential partners or reading a blog post about productivity. Add to the list as things pop into your head and don’t worry about feeling overwhelmed when you look at it, it’s just a master list. I talk more about making successfully productive to do list here.
Family Matters
Getting your family involved and on board is crucial. If your husband or children can do small tasks that will make your life easier ask them to help. If not, make it known to your family that this amount of time you set aside, is yours. It’s a lot easier to manage if you can parallel your time with one where your family members are preoccupied. These could be times when the kids are doing homework, in bed, or the hubby is watching football.
Pray & Rest
It may sound counterproductive, but ensuring that you have a day where you do nothing business related is critical. It is equally as important as pushing forward in your entrepreneurial efforts. A day of rest is vital to remaining progressive as a business woman as it allows for rejuvenation and relaxation. It is a habit that you want to start early and continually practice. In addition, as women that believe in God, we are mandated to keep the sabbath holy. Take this time to ask God about His views of your business and the direction you should take.
Most times, the things we desire in entrepreneurship don’t simply fall into our laps without some initial effort on our part. Taking the time and effort to start small now will undoubtedly lead to the joy of seeing your business thrive big time in the long run. How do you plan to just get started on your business today? I’d love to hear about it in the comments!
